Theater Room Conversion
This completed design project is an example of what it takes to convert an existing basement family room into a dedicated theater. The first step was to determine the proper platform specifications for the type of seats chosen. The ceiling layout was designed to balance out new soffits with existing boxed in ductwork.

Originally the staircase behind the screen had an open banister however this was removed and the existing wall was extended to the bottom of the stairs. This wall served several purposes but most of all provided a place for the wall mounted front speakers. Because of traffic flow and the homeowners request for open floor space, to enable the grandchildren’s recitals and skits, a retractable screen was specified.
Custom acoustical isolation and diffusion panels were manufactured and installed over sheetrock walls, at critical reflection points. Side surround speakers wereincorporated into these panels at specific locations. Due to an existing window, the rear surrounds were mounted in the bulkhead above the rear row of seats. An opening was created for a built-in equipment rack that is accessible from a closet in the adjacent room.

New Home: Media Room
One look at the shape of this room and you can see this is a very unique space.  This home was still under construction when we were asked to take a look at this project. Knowing that this space was to be a media room, the builder lowered the floor in the front half of the room. No one had any idea as to what to do next.

As with all of our plans the first step was to build a 3D CAD model of the existing space. From there we developed ideas as to size and placement of all fixtures and furnishings. Next, along with a local AV contractor, we worked out electronic equipment specifications.
It was determined that a rear projection television would be built into a custom made integral wall unit. A roll out custom equipment rack was to be built into the wall, robbing a small amount of space from a bedroom closet, next door. Speaker placement was to be a combination of hidden in-walls and flush ceiling mounted units.
Due to the odd shape of the room, the space had good natural acoustical diffusion properties. We incorporated our own custom absorption system into the wall construction to further improve the sound quality. Since bedrooms were adjacent on two sides, heavy vinyl acoustic block materials were installed to help with sound containment.

New Home: Family Theater w/Karaoke
Many times we are contacted to design a theater in a new home after the majority of construction has already been completed.  This greatly limits our ability to really create the perfect plan.  In the case of this dedicated theater, we were called just in the nick of time.  The basement partition walls had just been framed.  After much discussion, the builder agreed to make the changes that we recommended.  Smaller custom builders usually allow our construction crew access as the home is being built.  In this case we had to wait for the homeowners to take possession, before we could start theater construction.  This is a prime example of why proper planning should be done well in advance, whenever possible.

This “Premium” design was created for a unique family that consisted of a set of four year old quintuplets along with an eight year old. Since the theater space had already been determined by the builder and the size was limited we decided to specify one of the commercial type seating manufacturers. Generally four of these style seats take up the total width of three of the standard sized theater chairs. The owner also requested a karaoke system be built into the design with a small stage for performances.
Even though we requested that the walls be left open, the builder installed the sheetrock anyway. This is what the room looked like when we started construction.

At our request the builder changed the double door opening from the center of the rear wall to a single door opening on the side wall. This room alteration completely freed up the otherwise shallow room depth and permitted an out of the way platform transition entrance.

Complete Basement with Open Theater
This project is a great example of what can result when the two divisions of our company unite on a single project.  Our 3D Theater Design team created a CAD model of this space a full year before construction by J.S. Heartwood actually began.  You will notice some color and texture variations between the original model and the finished product, however the well thought out general plan remained the same from the beginning to end.

The floor plan drawing depicted here is an example of the first phase of our design process.  This 2 dimensional desktop is where we do all our work assigning colors, textures and the very important 3rd dimension to all aspects of the plan.  The accuracy of all following design work is directly affected by the accuracy of this early stage model.

This is a 3D rendering of empty basement floor plan shown above. You will notice that the homeowner had the original builder construct and finish a full bathroom. Ductwork is also shown since it must be incorporated into ceiling design.

This is the completed floor plan view from which all final renderings have been generated

Entertaining during sporting events was the main focus of this Premium Deluxe design. As you can see, this final plan allows for close up viewing for those wanting to really get into the game. At the same time, others who may want to socialize while still being a part of the action can watch from the bar or pool table. A quieter, out of the way seating area is shown behind full bath.

This project was completed in the Spring of 2008. Below are some views that explain the process from beginning to end.
